TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taichung City (台中市) will expand its bus fare discount program to include foreign residents with permanent residency starting Jan. 20, according to a media report on Monday (Jan. 6). The initiative, initially launched in 2021 for Taichung citizens, aims to accommodate the growing number of foreign residents and enhance their sense of belonging by offering transportation benefits.
The Taichung City Transportation Bureau (台中市交通局) explained that foreign residents with permanent residency and a registered address in Taichung can bind their electronic ticket cards to the discount program at designated locations. The discount allows for the first 10 kilometers of bus travel to be free, with a maximum charge of NT$10 for distances beyond that.
The program, originally exclusive to Taichung citizens, their new resident spouses, and students from other counties studying in Taichung, now reflects the city's commitment to building a more inclusive environment. The bureau emphasized the importance of reducing the transportation burden on foreign residents and fostering a foreigner-friendly living environment.
As the launch date approaches, Taichung City officials encourage eligible foreign residents to prepare their documents and take advantage of the upcoming benefits. This initiative marks a significant step in integrating foreign residents into the community, offering them not only economic relief but also a deeper connection to the city.
