NEW TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The New Taipei City Public Works Department (新北市工務局) stated on Tuesday (Jan. 7) that all debris and personal items within and from the collapsed building in Sanchong District (三重區) will be transported to a designated temporary site. A construction site accident a day earlier in the New Taipei City district caused a residential building to collapse, leaving residents scrambling to recover their belongings.
On Monday morning, excavation work at No. 186 Liuzhang Street (六張街) led to a foundation collapse, causing the neighboring building to tilt and fall. The New Taipei City Fire Department responded swiftly, evacuating nearby residents and halting construction. Fortunately, the incident on Monday evening did not result in any injuries. Many residents, however, could not retrieve their belongings, including personal items and ancestral tablets.
Feng Chao-lin (馮兆麟), the director of the New Taipei Public Works Department (新北市工務局), said that the department would catalog valuable items and notify residents to claim them later. Despite residents' wishes to return home last night, safety concerns prevented their entry, he added. The Public Works Department plans to monitor the temporary site with surveillance cameras and ensure the safekeeping of valuable items.
Residents await further instructions to reclaim their possessions, highlighting the urgency of resolving the aftermath safely and efficiently ahead of the Lunar New Year celebrations.
