TAIPEI (TVBS News) — U.S. President Donald Trump announced Wednesday (March 5) that Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC, 台積電) will construct the world's most powerful chips in the U.S. Trump described TSMC as the world's most dominant company, holding a 97% market share. He emphasized that the new administration has attracted US$1.7 trillion (about NT$56 trillion) in new investments within weeks.
Speaking in a joint address to Congress, Trump criticized the Biden administration's CHIPS and Science Act, calling it an utterly "terrible policy." He argued that the U.S. spent hundreds of billions of dollars without meaningful results and stated that the country would not provide financial subsidies to TSMC. Trump recommended Congress repeal the CHIPS Act and redirect the remaining funds to reduce national debt or other appropriate uses.
Trump assured that companies establishing factories in the U.S. would be exempt from tariffs. He highlighted significant investments from several companies, including a US$200 billion investment from Japan's SoftBank Group and US$500 billion each from U.S. companies OpenAI and Oracle. Also, Apple announced a US$500 billion investment.
