TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The ripples of tragedy from last month's Taichung department store explosion widened on Thursday (March 13) as officials confirmed a 2-year-old girl from Macau has succumbed to her injuries, becoming the fifth fatality in the devastating incident. The Macau Health Bureau announced that the toddler, who had been fighting for her life since the Feb. 13 blast at Shin Kong Mitsukoshi (新光三越) department store, died last Friday at Hospital Centre S. Januario (仁伯爵綜合醫院) in Macau.
The explosion had already claimed four lives, including the girl's grandparents who perished at the scene. After sustaining severe head trauma in the blast, the child initially received critical care at China Medical University Hospital (中國醫藥大學附設醫院) in Taiwan before being airlifted back to Macau on Feb. 26 for continued treatment. In a somber statement, the Macau Health Bureau expressed profound grief over the child's death and extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family. Officials confirmed that psychological support and counseling services have been made available to the family as they navigate this devastating loss.
Shin Kong Mitsukoshi also issued a press release conveying deep regret and sympathy. The company stated it had established immediate contact with the family following the incident and pledged ongoing support and assistance during this difficult time. Meanwhile, the investigation into the explosion continues. The Taichung District Prosecutors Office is working to determine the precise cause of the deadly blast, while the Taichung City Fire Bureau has reportedly gathered new evidence. Authorities anticipate the comprehensive fire investigation report will be completed by month's end, potentially bringing answers to a tragedy that has now claimed its youngest victim.
