TAOYUAN (TVBS News) — In a first for Taiwan's professional baseball league, the Taoyuan City Government has partnered with the Rakuten Monkeys (樂天桃猿), one of the island's premier baseball teams, to create designated pet-friendly sections at games beginning in May and June 2025. The innovative initiative will welcome small and medium-sized dogs to selected baseball games, local media reported Tuesday.
Taoyuan's Department of Agriculture (農業局) Director Chen Kuan-i (陳冠義) explained on Tuesday (April 22) that Taiwan's rapidly growing pet ownership rates provided the primary motivation for developing this fan-friendly concept, which aims to accommodate the changing lifestyle preferences of local baseball enthusiasts who consider pets as family members.
Team officials have allocated a dedicated area near third base in the outfield stands where fans can enjoy games alongside their canine companions. The baseball club plans to transform the transitional space between infield and outfield sections into a specialized pet-friendly park scheduled to debut by late June, coinciding with the season's second half. This pioneering amenity represents an investment of NT$5.36 million (approximately US$165,075) and will initially limit access to small and medium-sized dogs only.
Local legislator Ling Tao (凌濤), a Taoyuan City Councilor, commended municipal authorities for advancing pet-inclusive policies within public entertainment venues. His remarks included advocacy for extending access to these designated areas beyond scheduled games. Agriculture Director Chen responded by revealing ongoing negotiations with Rakuten Monkeys management regarding public availability during non-game days, while also mentioning development of special promotional offers targeting pet owners. ★
