Taiwan braces for heavy rain advisory (TVBS News)

TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Central Weather Administration (CWA, 氣象署) issued a heavy rain advisory on Wednesday (July 9), warning of increased rainfall probabilities across 15 counties in Taiwan due to a low-pressure system and southwest winds. The advisory highlights Hsinchu City, Hsinchu County, and Miaoli County as areas under severe rain watch.

Meteorologist Lin De-en (林得恩) noted on Facebook that unstable atmospheric conditions in central and southern Taiwan, particularly in Chiayi and the Kaohsiung and Pingtung mountain areas, have extended the duration of rainfall, making heavy or localized torrential rains more likely. Lin noted that today's moisture levels have increased, resulting in a significantly higher chance of rainfall across Taiwan compared to yesterday (July 8), with a tendency for short-duration intense downpours.

The CWA cautioned that the western regions, especially Hsinchu County and Miaoli County, could experience isolated heavy rain or torrential downpours, posing risks of lightning and strong gusts. Meanwhile, Lin urged coastal and low-lying areas to remain vigilant as the combination of high tides and concentrated rainfall could lead to flooding due to poor drainage.
