TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Typhoon Danas and subsequent heavy rains have inflicted significant agricultural damage, the Ministry of Agriculture (MOA, 農業部) reported Wednesday (July 9). Losses have surged to nearly NT$1.6 billion, with Chiayi County and Tainan City bearing the brunt, accounting for more than 60% of the total damage.
As of 11 a.m., MOA estimated losses to agricultural products and private facilities at NT$1.59862 billion. Chiayi County experienced the most severe impact, with damages totaling NT$603.61 million, representing 38%. Tainan City followed with NT$471.27 million in losses, accounting for 29%.
Yunlin County reported NT$301.25 million in damages, representing 19% of the total, while Changhua County and Pingtung County faced losses of NT$108.27 million and NT$54.13 million, respectively. Kaohsiung City reported damages of NT$44.15 million, each accounting for 3% of the total.
MOA estimated crop losses at NT$1.07125 billion, with 13,822 hectares affected and a 30% damage rate. The most impacted crop, pomelo, suffered NT$210.04 million in losses. Livestock losses amounted to NT$30.42 million, primarily affecting 346,000 chickens, with damages reaching NT$27.79 million.
MOA has announced cash assistance and low-interest loans for affected regions and continues to compile and update disaster reports.
