TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Typhoon Podul, the 11th typhoon of 2025, intensified Monday (Aug. 11) as meteorologists predicted it will strengthen into a moderate storm. The typhoon has accelerated its southward trajectory, prompting authorities to consider issuing land and sea warnings by Tuesday (Aug. 12). Taiwan's weather officials are closely monitoring the storm's development as it approaches the island nation.

The Weather Express (颱風論壇), a meteorological forecasting service, reported that the typhoon's path has shifted toward Yilan and Hualien counties in eastern Taiwan. The storm's margin of error has narrowed over eastern Taiwan, making it nearly certain to become the second typhoon to strike the island this year. Experts expect the typhoon to weaken as it approaches south of Okinawa Monday (Aug. 12) due to unfavorable atmospheric conditions, possibly downgrading to a light typhoon.

The Weather Express emphasized that the typhoon's impact will likely be brief, primarily affecting Taiwan Wednesday (Aug. 13) before rapidly weakening afterward. The storm's compact size concentrates wind and rain in its core, making the exact landfall location critical for damage assessment. Yilan and Hualien counties in eastern Taiwan may experience the most significant effects, while northern and mountainous regions across the island will face lesser but notable impacts. Current meteorological projections indicate the typhoon will not generate a southwest airflow pattern. ◼
