TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taipei authorities canceled the Taipei Summer Festival's (大稻埕夏日節) fireworks and music show scheduled for Wednesday evening (Aug. 13) as Typhoon Podul threatened the island. The Department of Information and Tourism in Taipei (台北市觀光傳播局) Taiwan's capital city tourism bureau emphasized attendee safety as the primary reason for the event's cancellation. The decision affects one of the city's most anticipated summer cultural events.

The Central Weather Administration (CWA, 中央氣象署), Taiwan's national weather service, issued a sea warning for Typhoon Podul earlier on Tuesday. Meteorologists warned they may also issue a land warning by Tuesday afternoon as the typhoon's path suggests potential landfall. Weather experts predict that gusts in Taipei City will reach levels 8-9 on the Beaufort scale (74-88 kmh), exceeding safety standards for fireworks displays.

Officials plan to incorporate the canceled fireworks and music performances into future events while urging citizens and visitors to monitor weather warnings from the CWA. They advise the public to avoid hazardous areas and take necessary precautions to protect lives and property during the typhoon's approach. The cancellation underscores Taiwan's commitment to public safety during severe weather events. ◼
