TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Meteorologist Wu Der-romg (吳德榮) warned Friday (Aug. 22) in his column for the Meteorological Application and Development Foundation (MADF, 氣象應用推廣基金會), a private weather research organization, that Taiwan will endure a dangerous prolonged heatwave over the next week. The forecast signals potentially life-threatening conditions as temperatures prepare to soar across the island, prompting urgent public health concerns for millions of residents.
Wu emphasized that according to the latest European model (ECMWF), scorching clear weather will blanket Taiwan from Friday through Sunday (Aug. 24), with dangerous temperatures soaring to 38 degrees Celsius (100.4°F). He urgently advised comprehensive sun protection and heatstroke prevention measures for outdoor activities, while also highlighting the possibility of localized afternoon showers or thunderstorms developing in mountainous regions across the island.
Wu forecasts predominantly sunny and sweltering conditions from Monday (Aug. 25) through Thursday (Aug. 28), with increased atmospheric moisture streaming from southern regions bringing occasional relief showers to Hualien, Taitung, and Pingtung counties. Afternoon showers or potentially severe thunderstorms may also develop across the southern plains, offering temporary respite from the intense heat.
Wu also observed that Typhoon Lingling (颱風玲玲) continues moving northeast from Kyushu, Japan, and will rapidly weaken into a tropical depression over cooler waters. A separate tropical disturbance east of the Philippines will traverse through Luzon (呂宋島) before entering the South China Sea within days. He specifically pointed out that while the disturbance might intensify into a typhoon, it would not directly threaten or affect Taiwan's weather patterns.
