TAIPEI (TVBS News) — New Taipei City unveiled plans for the ambitious Wutai Light Rail (五泰輕軌) project connecting four major districts, Sanchong (三重), Luzhou (蘆洲), Wugu (五股), and Taishan (泰山). The comprehensive transportation initiative aims to enhance regional connectivity and stimulate local economic development across northern Taiwan's metropolitan area, according to Mayor Hou Yu-ih (侯友宜). The 11.61-kilometer project represents a significant infrastructure investment designed to serve the growing population in New Taipei City's industrial corridors.
The Wutai Light Rail will feature 14 stations, with completion expected seven years after central government approval. Lee Cheng-an (李政安), director of New Taipei MRT Bureau, Taiwan's metropolitan rail authority, stated the project aims to accommodate 93,000 daily passengers. Mayor Hou emphasized the rail's design incorporates elevated corridors to improve speed, safety, and service quality, adding that the development will create a "Light Rail PLUS" experience for commuters.
Strategic planning positions the F01 station just 20 meters (22 yards) from the Circular Line's Y22 station, while F03 will reserve space for future connection to the Shezi Light Rail (社子輕軌). Station F05 will offer seamless transfers to the existing Luzhou Line. Stations F08 through F12 will feature elevated corridors and newly installed restrooms, significantly enhancing overall service quality for passengers throughout the network.
Lee noted the project targets significant annual ridership, with peak capacity reaching 4,724 passengers per hour per direction during rush periods. Trains will operate every 3.5 minutes, each carrying up to 265 passengers across the system. This light rail system aims to strengthen connections between Wugu and Taishan districts, fostering sustained regional economic growth and development. ◼
