TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Southern Taiwan witnessed a spectacular meteorological display Monday (Sept. 15) as rare lightning storms illuminated the night sky, captivating residents across multiple cities. Dramatic footage of the extraordinary weather event spread rapidly online, showing intense lightning bolts, heavy rainfall, and hail striking Tainan, Taiwan's ancient capital, drawing widespread public fascination with nature's powerful display.

Observers in Kaohsiung and Pingtung documented lightning displays that persisted for over a minute, with mountain residents capturing footage of multiple bolts creating sustained electrical waves across the sky. The mesmerizing spectacle prompted widespread amazement among online viewers. Huang Wen-ting (黃文亭), a senior technical specialist at the Southern Region Weather Center (台灣南區氣象中心), Taiwan's regional meteorological office, attributed the phenomenon to powerful atmospheric convection that developed inland before moving westward toward Taiwan's coast.

Weather forecasters warn that hot conditions will persist across Taiwan over the coming week, accompanied by potential afternoon thunderstorms that could intensify regional weather patterns. The Central Weather Administration (CWA, 氣象署), Taiwan's national weather service, projects increased rainfall probability and intensity in eastern and southern regions, while noting heightened risks of tropical disturbances or new typhoon formations, including the possibility of twin typhoons developing simultaneously. ◼
