TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Meteorologists monitor Tropical Depression No. 20 as it strengthens into a mild typhoon Thursday (Sept. 18) evening. The system sits about 1,630 kilometers (1,013 miles) east-southeast of Taitung and will move northwest under Pacific high pressure. The typhoon could pass south of Taiwan between September 23 and September 24, bringing severe weather risks.

The Taiwan Typhoon Forum (TWTYBBS, 台灣颱風論壇) warns that Yilan, Hualien, Taitung, Pingtung, and Hengchun could experience heavy rainfall despite no direct hit. These areas face higher risks due to their windward positions relative to the approaching storm. Southern Taiwan's wind and rain intensity depends on the typhoon's proximity, while northern Taiwan should prepare for strong winds.

TWTYBBS forecasts central Taiwan will face less severe impact from the approaching typhoon. The organization emphasized the storm's path may still adjust, requiring residents to monitor weather updates closely. Taiwan prepares for potential severe weather as meteorologists continue tracking the system's development and projected trajectory. ◼
