TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's Industrial Technology Research Institute (工研院), the island's leading technology development organization, signed a cooperation agreement with Germany's Forschungszentrum Jülich GmbH (德國于利希研究中心) Tuesday (Sept. 23) to advance hydrogen-ammonia energy technologies. The partnership aims to develop and integrate advanced fuel cell power systems using the microgrid platform at Tainan's Shalun Green Energy Technology Demonstration Site (沙崙綠能科技示範場). The collaboration represents a major step forward in Taiwan's clean energy development efforts and international technology partnerships.
The institute emphasized the partnership with Forschungszentrum Jülich, a prominent European research institution, will focus on developing advanced hydrogen-ammonia fuel cell power systems for commercial applications. Officials plan to integrate and verify these cutting-edge systems at the Tainan demonstration site to accelerate hydrogen energy applications across Taiwan. The collaboration aims to advance the marketization of clean hydrogen technologies while establishing Taiwan as a regional hub for renewable energy innovation.
The signing ceremony featured deputy minister Faa-Jeng Lin (林法正) of Taiwan's National Science and Technology Council (國科會), the government body overseeing research policy, along with other senior energy officials. The partnership will establish a 100Nm³/h green ammonia-to-hydrogen conversion system and a 200kW solid oxide fuel cell power system at the demonstration site. These initiatives aim to verify hydrogen energy's carbon reduction effectiveness in practical applications while advancing Taiwan's net-zero emissions goals.
Forschungszentrum Jülich, supported by the German government, plays a crucial role in advancing Europe's hydrogen energy economy through extensive research and development programs. The institute employs over 7,000 researchers from 114 countries and leads large-scale hydrogen demonstration and industrialization projects across Europe. The collaboration will combine Germany's advanced materials and system development expertise with Taiwan's world-class demonstration sites and manufacturing capabilities. ◼
