TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The National Board of Review (國家評論協會) named Taiwanese film "Left-Handed Girl" (左撇子女孩) among the top five international films Friday (Dec. 5). The recognition boosts its Oscar chances in March. The prestigious board, established in 1909, announces the earliest film awards each year, officially marking the start of Hollywood's competitive awards season. This year's announcement positions "Left-Handed Girl" for increased visibility during the critical months leading to the Academy Awards.

"It Was Just an Accident" (只是一場意外), a joint production by France, Iran, and Luxembourg, won this year's Best International Film award. Taiwan's film industry celebrates as "Left-Handed Girl" becomes the first Taiwanese film in 18 years to make the list. Previous Taiwanese entries include "Lust, Caution" (色戒) in 2007, "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" (臥虎藏龍) in 2000, and "Eat Drink Man Woman" (飲食男女) in 1994.

Hollywood's awards season typically kicks off in late November, spearheaded by the National Board of Review awards and various critics' association awards. The competitive season culminates in the prestigious Academy Awards, the Oscars, in March. The extensive exposure gained during this critical season is crucial for international films vying for Oscar nominations, and "Left-Handed Girl" stands to benefit significantly from this industry momentum. ◼
