TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Yunlin County launched the special exhibition, "The Soul of Passing on Art: Huang Hai-tai and the Way of Puppetry" (傳藝之魂：黃海岱與戲偶之道) on Friday (Jan. 2) to commemorate the 126th anniversary of puppet theater master Huang Hai-tai's (黃海岱) birth. The exhibition showcases Huang's treasured manuscripts and traditional painted buildings, offering a diverse portrayal of puppet theater.
The county's Department of Cultural Affairs and Tourism (文化觀光處) held a press conference to mark the opening of the exhibition. The exhibition features four major sections, highlighting the creative lineage and spiritual inheritance of the Huang family across three generations. It also presents the evolution and aesthetic innovation of Pili Puppet Theater (霹靂布袋戲), showcasing the art form's dynamic transformation.
Chris Huang (黃文章), chairman of Pili International Multimedia (霹靂國際多媒體) and grandson of Huang Hai-tai, expressed his gratitude to the Yunlin County Government for its support and recognition of glove puppetry. He stated that as member of a younger generation, he will follow in his grandfather's footsteps to improve glove puppetry and ensure its future.
Chang Li-shan (張麗善), the Yunlin County magistrate, highlighted the Huang family's tradition of integrating digital technology with traditional puppet theater to produce animations and films. She affirmed the county government's ongoing efforts to cultivate puppet theater through various policies.
