TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taipei Rapid Transit Corporation (台北捷運公司) unveiled a permanent memorial plaque Wednesday (Jan. 14) honoring Yu Chia-chang (余家昶). Yu died Dec. 19, confronting an attacker at Taipei Main Station (台北車站) who killed three people. The stainless steel plaque commemorates Yu's heroism in attempting to prevent further casualties during the mass attack.
Yu confronted the assailant surnamed Chang (張) at the M7 exit as Chang attacked passengers with knives. Chang threw smoke bombs and killed four people at the station and nearby Eslite Spectrum Nanxi (中山南西誠品). Yu's intervention prevented Chang from detonating additional explosives that could have killed more travelers.
The stainless steel plaque stands on the first basement level passage wall leading to M8 exit. Taipei Deputy Mayor Lin Yi-hua (林奕華) and Taipei Rapid Transit Corporation Chairman Chao Shiao-lien (趙紹廉) conducted the unveiling ceremony. The memorial features inscriptions in both Chinese and English commemorating Yu's selfless courage.
Taiwan's Legislative Yuan, the parliament, approved enshrining Yu in the Martyrs' Shrine on Dec. 22. The Taoyuan city government confirmed Yu will be enshrined at Taoyuan Martyrs' Shrine (桃園忠烈祠) in spring 2026. The shrine honors military personnel and civilians who sacrificed their lives for Taiwan. ◼
