TAIPEI (TVBS News) — A strong continental cold air mass will sweep across Taiwan starting Tuesday (Jan. 20), bringing chilly weather and potential heavy rain to northern regions, the Central Weather Administration (CWA, 中央氣象署) announced. The CWA forecasts rainfall in the Keelung North Coast, the northeast, and the Greater Taipei mountain areas, with temperatures dropping significantly in central and northern Taiwan. Other regions will experience cold mornings and evenings, with the cold front expected to persist through Thursday (Jan. 23).

The CWA forecasts brief showers in areas north of Hsinchu, with scattered showers in Miaoli, the eastern and southeastern regions, and the Hengchun (恆春) Peninsula, a popular tourist area in southern Taiwan. The cold air mass will continue to affect northern and northeastern Taiwan from Wednesday (Jan. 21) to Thursday (Jan. 23), keeping temperatures low. Mornings and evenings will be particularly cold during this period, the administration said.

The administration noted that rain will persist on the Keelung North Coast, the northeast, and Greater Taipei on Tuesday (Jan. 21) and Wednesday (Jan. 22), with brief showers extending to areas north of Taoyuan. Scattered rain is expected in the eastern region, Hsinchu and Miaoli, the southeastern areas, and the mountain regions during this period. Most other areas will remain partly cloudy, according to the CWA forecast.

The CWA said brief rain will continue on the Keelung North Coast, the eastern region, the Hengchun Peninsula, and Greater Taipei on Thursday (Jan. 23), with scattered showers in the central and northern mountains. The cold front will weaken by Saturday (Jan. 24) and Sunday (Jan. 25), though temperatures will remain cool in the mornings and evenings. Central and southern Taiwan will experience a noticeable day-night temperature difference, with partly cloudy to sunny conditions elsewhere.

The CWA warned the public to remain cautious of long waves along the Keelung North Coast, the eastern region, and the Hengchun Peninsula from Tuesday (Jan. 20) to Thursday (Jan. 22). The warning includes Orchid Island (蘭嶼) and Green Island (綠島), two popular tourist destinations off Taiwan's southeastern coast. Residents and visitors in coastal areas should take precautions and monitor weather updates from the administration. ◼
