TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan will experience mostly warm and dry weather this week with afternoon thunderstorms possible in some areas, the Central Weather Administration (CWA, 中央氣象署) forecast Monday (May 18). Southeastern regions and the Hengchun Peninsula may see isolated showers Wednesday. Greater Taipei, northeastern and mountainous areas may experience afternoon thunderstorms starting Tuesday.

The island will see mostly cloudy to sunny weather Saturday through Sunday. Afternoon thunderstorms may occur in Greater Taipei, Yilan and Hualien areas. Mountainous areas in central and northern Taiwan will have a higher chance of afternoon rain, the administration said. The weather pattern reflects a brief pause in the monsoon season.

A high-pressure system will keep the monsoon front north of Taiwan, resulting in predominantly dry and warm conditions this week. Western regions will see midday temperatures reach 30 to 34 degrees Celsius (86 to 93 degrees Fahrenheit) Tuesday as south-southwest winds bring warmer air northward. The monsoon season will take a brief pause, leading to warmer temperatures, according to Facebook page Weather Boy TW (天氣即時預報).

Taiwan's winds will transition from south to southwest Tuesday through Friday, leading to stable weather, weather company WeatherRisk (天氣風險) said. Most regions will experience cloudy to sunny mornings with increasing afternoon cloud cover. Thunderstorms are possible in mountain areas during afternoons. Southeastern areas and the Hengchun Peninsula may see isolated showers, the company said.

Cloud cover will increase Saturday and Sunday, bringing mostly cloudy to sunny weather across Taiwan. Mountainous regions may see scattered showers, and daytime temperatures may drop slightly due to increased cloud cover. Low temperatures at night will remain unchanged, WeatherRisk said. The forecast suggests relatively stable conditions through the weekend. ◼
