The PC came to Computex 2026 as a guest in its own house. The keynotes belonged to server silicon, the biggest booths to rack builders, and the show's center of gravity to the data center. Yet the week still produced the most consequential PC news in a decade, because the machine itself is being rebuilt around AI agents at the exact moment its economics are being rewritten by AI's appetite for memory.
The headline act was the RTX Spark, the Arm-based processor Nvidia developed with MediaTek and built on TSMC's 3-nanometer process. The part fuses a 20-core Grace-class CPU with a Blackwell GPU carrying 6,144 CUDA cores, supports up to 128 gigabytes of unified memory, and delivers roughly one petaflop of AI performance, enough to run large agent models entirely on the device. Laptops and compact desktops arrive this fall from Asus, Dell, HP, Lenovo, Microsoft Surface, and MSI, with Acer and Gigabyte to follow. Notebook versions are expected to start around US$2,200, a price that announces exactly which buyer Nvidia wants: the customer who currently walks out of the store with Apple silicon.
The rest of the field answered in force. Intel used the show to put its Core Ultra Series 3 lineup, the first consumer AI PC platform built fully on its 18A process, behind more than 300 designs, and launched its Arc G3 graphics chips for a new wave of gaming handhelds. Qualcomm attacked from the opposite end, introducing the Snapdragon C platform for Windows laptops starting above US$300, a direct response to Apple's US$599 MacBook Neo, alongside its premium X2 Elite. AMD reminded the audience that its sixth-generation EPYC processor, codenamed Venice, is already in production on TSMC's 2-nanometer node, the halo over its client roadmap. For the first time since the 1990s, four vednors are competing seriously for the Windows machine.
The result is that the AI PC has stopped being a marketing category and become the market itself. Counterpoint Research forecasts that shipments of what it calls AI-advanced PCs will grow 52 percent in 2026 and reach roughly 59 percent of all PCs shipped; Gartner puts the figure at about 143 million units, or 55 percent of the market, up from 31 percent in 2025. The end of Windows 10 support in October 2025 continues to push enterprise fleets toward new hardware.
For PC makers, memory is a large share of the bill of materials, and the pain lands hardest in the entry and mid tiers where volume lives. IDC has cut its 2026 PC forecasts in response, with scenarios ranging from a 5 percent decline to as much as 9 to 11 percent in the severe case, even as the market's dollar value rises to about US$274 billion on higher prices. Brands front-loaded shipments ahead of the increases, which flattered the first quarter; Inventec, for example, shipped 5.4 million notebooks in Q1, up 8 percent. Visibility into the second half is far thinner.
The arithmetic points to a two-speed market. Premium AI machines, the RTX Sparks and Core Ultra 3 flagships, will sell out their constrained memory allocations to buyers who can absorb the cost. The sub-US$700 consumer notebook, the volume engine of the industry for twenty years, gets squeezed toward extinction, with only Apple's MacBook Neo buckling the trend.
Taiwan captures this transition twice over. Every one of the competing platforms, including Intel's outsourced tiles and Apple's M-series, is manufactured by TSMC, and MediaTek's co-development of the RTX Spark gives a domestic chip designer a stake in a premium Windows machine for the first time. On the systems side, the brands have already diversified: Asus raised its 2026 server growth target to 100 percent, and the notebook ODMs treat PCs as a stable cash business rather than a growth engine.
The PC is not dying. It is being split in two. One half is becoming a local AI workstation, redesigned around agents and priced accordingly. The other half is being rationed by the memory market. Computex 2026 will be remembered as the show where both futures became visible at once, and where the machine that built Taiwan's tech industry quietly became one more front in the AI infrastructure war.
