TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Responding to plummeting temperatures, the Central Weather Administration (CWA) issued cold advisories for several counties and cities on Saturday (Dec. 23) morning, urging residents to keep warm.

The whole island felt the chill, with temperatures ranging from 11 to 14 degrees Celsius. Open areas in Hsinchu and locations north of it, as well as in Yilan and Hualien, braced for temperatures around 10 degrees Celsius.

According to the latest simulation by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), parts of northern and eastern Taiwan, as well as mountainous regions in the central and southern parts of the island, are expected to experience brief spells of rain.

Occasional light rain may also occur in some low-lying areas. Meanwhile, Mount Hehuan, Xueshan, and Mount Nanhu, all of which rise above 3,000 meters, are forecasted to witness subzero temperatures with high chances of snowfall.

As per the most recent data, no further strong cold air influence is expected before the New Year. Beginning next Tuesday through Wednesday, the chilling air will gradually recede, making way for clear skies and a gradual rise in temperatures, with an enlarged diurnal temperature range.

Climate expert Chia Hsin-hsing underscored the high variability and uncertainty of the New Year’s weather, urging the public to stay updated with the latest forecast.
