TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The possibility of another earthquake in Taiwan triggering a tsunami is low, Japan's Headquarters for Earthquake Research Promotion said on Tuesday (April 9), following an analysis of the earthquake that struck Hualien County on April 3.

Japan's TBS television station reported that during the Hualien earthquake, both Okinawa Prefecture and Yonaguni Island in Japan recorded a maximum seismic intensity of 4. The Japan Meteorological Agency had also issued a tsunami warning for Okinawa Prefecture at the time.

The earthquake research committee analyzed the latest data during its regular meeting on Tuesday and assessed the Hualien earthquake. The results showed that although there have been frequent aftershocks of magnitude 6 or more since the Hualien earthquake, the number of aftershocks has been decreasing regularly.

"The possibility of another earthquake triggering a tsunami like the one on April 3 is not high," the committee said.
