Taoyuan blackouts not caused by power shortage: Premier (TVBS News)

TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Amid recent power outages in Taoyuan, Premier Chen Chien-jen clarified on Wednesday (May 8), that the blackouts were not due to a power shortage, urging the public not to conflate the two issues.

Statistics show that 63% of Taoyuan's power outages were caused by external forces, 31% by equipment issues, and the remaining 6% by natural disasters. Chen cited examples such as a civilian crane touching the power grid the previous day, causing a blackout for over ten thousand households in the Luzhu District. A car collision with a power pole also resulted in a power outage on Wednesday.

Chen emphasized the distinction between power outages and power shortages. While power outages caused by accidents can be restored in the shortest possible time after emergency repairs, power shortages cannot be remedied in the same way.

The Taiwan Power Company has initiated a Taoyuan inspection plan, enlisting over 100 staff members from its New Taipei, Hsinchu, and Miaoli branches to join in equipment inspection and maintenance. This move aims to reduce the incidence of power outages in Taoyuan.
