TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Ministry of National Defense (MND) has made a significant splash in the digital realm by launching a Threads account on Saturday (June 1), attracting nearly 10,000 followers within the first 24 hours. This move demonstrates the ministry's successful engagement with a broader audience through social media, highlighting a strategic shift in its communication approach.

Expanding Influence Through Innovation

Military experts said that the Ministry of National Defense's initiative is a breakthrough in overcoming information echo chambers. By adopting a "layered" propaganda strategy, the ministry aims to extend its reach and influence. The rapid growth of its Threads account, with over 8,000 followers in just a day, underscores the public's enthusiastic response to the military's foray into emerging social platforms.

Lin Ying-yu (林穎佑), an assistant professor of international affairs and strategic studies at Tamkang University, emphasized the effectiveness of utilizing various propaganda strategies to achieve a wider impact. This approach marks a departure from traditional communication methods, signaling a new era of military engagement with the public.

A New Leadership Style

Under Wellington Koo's (顧立雄) leadership, the Ministry of National Defense has adopted clear standards for information dissemination and meeting protocols, distinguishing it from past practices.

Koo's unique leadership style was evident during last month's military exercises around Taiwan. He briefly attended briefings before leaving without issuing any directives. Lin highlighted Koo's cautious and innovative approach as a civilian minister, reflecting a significant shift in the ministry's operational philosophy.

The MND's strategic embrace of social media and Koo's leadership style represent a modern military communication and leadership approach. As the ministry continues to navigate the challenges of digital engagement and strategic communication, its innovative tactics are set to redefine its relationship with the public and its role on the global stage.
