KINMEN (TVBS News) — Kinmen County announced plans to award badminton champion Lee Yang (李洋) NT$5.5 million after his gold medal win with his partner Wang Chi-Lin (王齊麟) on Sunday (Aug. 4). Kinmen County Commissioner Chen Fu-hai (陳福海) also revealed the county's commitment to developing badminton and table tennis facilities, including an international-level badminton stadium.

Lee and Wang successfully defended their title in the men's doubles at the Olympic Games, securing Taiwan's first gold this season. Lee's total prize includes NT$3 million for the Olympic gold, NT$100,000 for being selected as a national athlete, and NT$50,000 monthly for four years in training subsidies, totaling NT$5.5 million.

 

On Sunday night, Commissioner Chen, Deputy Commissioner Li Wen-liang (李文良), and Lee's uncle Li Kai-chen (李開陣) joined nearly a thousand residents at Kinmen County Stadium to watch the match against the Chinese team. Commissioner Chen expressed gratitude, thanking Lee for letting the world see Taiwan and Kinmen. Chen added that Kinmen will continue to nurture outstanding athletes.

Chen and Li announced plans to build an international-level badminton stadium to host global events and provide Kinmen athletes with more opportunities. Chen also posted on Facebook, offering heartfelt congratulations and wishing Lee continued success.

Lee's relatives praised him as a beacon for the family, Kinmen, and Taiwan, thanking the community for their support. The county's investment in sports infrastructure signals a bright future for local athletes aiming for international acclaim.
