TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Thousands of supporters of Taiwan People's Party (TPP) Chairman Ko Wen-je (柯文哲) plan to rally behind him at a press conference on Thursday (Aug. 29) amid ongoing controversies. Ko faces allegations of misusing political donations and purchasing commercial property near the Legislative Yuan with NT$43 million in cash.
The press conference will be held this afternoon to explain the accounts of political contributions. In addition to the issue of accounts, the purchase of private commercial organizations, whether to ask for the resignation of the party chairman and other issues are expected to be discussed.
Political commentator Chou Hsuan (周軒) revealed screenshots from a LINE group chat with over 1,700 members, showing Ko's supporters mobilizing to attend the press conference. According to Chou, the group members urged others to "support Ko Wen-je at the press conference."
At 3 p.m., Ko will address the media alongside Huang Shan-shan (黃珊珊), Vicky Chen (陳智菡), and Chou Yu-hsiu (周榆修). They aim to clarify doubts related to the presidential election campaign funds.
Speculation is rife that Ko may announce a temporary leave from his party chairman duties. Potential successors include Legislator Huang Kuo-chang (黃國昌) and Central Executive Committee designated member Lin Fu-nan (林富男).
Vicky Chen, director of the Taiwan People's Party Legislative Caucus Office, stated in a morning interview that the public expects a thorough explanation of the political donation issues. She emphasized that the press conference will cover the flow and balance of the funds, and those responsible will be held accountable.
As the political landscape remains turbulent, all eyes will be on Ko's statements and any potential shifts in party leadership.
