TAITUNG(TVBS News) — A cold air mass brought snow early Friday (Jan. 10) to Jiaming Lake Mountain Cabin (嘉明湖山屋) in Taitung, accumulating 2 centimeters. Located along the Jiaming Lake National Trail (嘉明湖國家步道) at an elevation of about 3,400 meters, the area drew hikers who marveled at the picturesque snow scene.
Hikers emerged from the cabin to capture photos and build snowmen, expressing excitement at the unexpected snowfall. Many hoped to witness the rare sight of a frozen Jiaming Lake and the snow-covered peak of Mount Sancha (三叉山). Chen Ying-yuan (陳盈源), an official from the Forestry and Nature Conservation Agency Taitung Branch (林業保育署台東分署), reported that temperatures in the mountains dropped below zero degrees Celsius, with heavy snow falling after 8 a.m.
The agency issued a reminder about the low temperatures and the potential for snow and ice in the mountain areas. They advised hikers to stay warm and consider bringing snow gear like crampons. As the snowfall continues, outdoor enthusiasts might find more opportunities to enjoy the winter wonderland, but safety remains a priority.
