TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Kuomintang (KMT, 國民黨) on Friday (March 7) proposed in the Legislative Yuan (立法院) that the Executive Yuan (行政院) deliver a special report on Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company's (台積電, TSMC) expanded investment in the U.S. The proposal, which demands a second reading and party negotiations, seeks to address concerns over national security and regional stability.

KMT legislators criticized the Executive Yuan for its absence during crucial negotiations, accusing it of failing to secure necessary commitments from the U.S. They highlighted that U.S. President Donald Trump and TSMC CEO C.C. Wei announced a US$100 billion investment at the White House earlier this week, prompting foreign media to suggest that this move jeopardizes Taiwan's priority, dubbing TSMC as "American Semiconductor Manufacturing Company."

The members of the opposition party emphasized Taiwan's robust semiconductor industry, with a projected output value exceeding NT$6 trillion in 2025 and TSMC holding over 60% market share. KMT legislator Ko Ju-chun (葛如鈞) criticized the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP, 民進黨) government for its ineffective international economic negotiations, which allegedly forced TSMC into increased U.S. investments under pressure.

Meanwhile, Taiwan People's Party (TPP, 民眾黨) legislator Chang Chi-kai (張啓楷) urged DPP lawmakers to defend TSMC against inadequate security and tariff protections. Legislative Yuan President Han Kuo-yu (韓國瑜) later directed the proposal for a second reading and party negotiations without opposition.
