TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taipei Metro (台北捷運), a vital public transportation system in Taiwan's capital, has implemented an innovative Internet of Things (IoT) system to address passenger comfort and environmental sustainability goals. The metro system, which previously faced criticism for unpleasant odors, now utilizes advanced technology to regulate train temperatures, significantly enhancing the daily commuting experience while advancing its environmental, social, and governance (ESG) initiatives.
The comprehensive IoT installation, completed in 2024, enables independent temperature control in each train car along with remote monitoring capabilities. This technological upgrade represents a major leap forward in Taipei Metro's ongoing efforts to improve service quality for its diverse ridership.
Liu Chin-hsueh (劉錦學), a senior technical specialist at Plant 1 of the Rolling Stock Division (車輛處車輛一廠資深技術專員), explained that the system can dynamically adjust temperatures in crowded cars by modifying air conditioning settings. This responsive approach ensures more consistent comfort levels throughout trains, even during peak travel times when passenger density varies significantly between cars.
Li Wen-yuan (李文淵), deputy director of the Rolling Stock Division, emphasized the system's sophisticated capability to automatically adjust temperatures according to seasonal variations and peak usage periods. The system has expanded from eight to 16 operational modes, providing more nuanced environmental control throughout the network.
Taiwan has extended its IoT implementation beyond temperature control to include lighting equipment throughout the system. Li noted that a dedicated energy-saving function allows for shutting down air conditioning systems and reducing lighting intensity when trains return to maintenance depots, generating annual savings of NT$13.5 million.
Serving over 2 million passengers daily, Taipei Metro continuously balances energy efficiency with service quality amid rising electricity costs and environmental concerns. The innovative temperature control system represents a significant advancement in improving both passenger experience and operational sustainability. As Taipei Metro continues to leverage smart technology solutions, it establishes important benchmarks for other urban centers working to enhance public transportation sustainability and user satisfaction.
