TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's environmental chief has reassured the public about toilet paper safety amid growing concerns over plumbing blockages. Environmental Minister Peng Chi-ming (彭啟明) confirmed on Tuesday (July 15) that 26 toilet paper brands currently available in Taiwan's market can be safely flushed without risking pipe obstruction. The minister explained that these approved products feature short fiber compositions that rapidly break down in water, significantly reducing the risk of toilet clogs in residential plumbing systems.

The Ministry of Environment (MOENV, 環境部) recommends consumers identify safe products by checking for eco-certification labels or official markings on packaging that designate flushable status. Minister Peng called on citizens to rely on scientific evidence rather than personal assumptions when assessing plumbing risks. He pointed out that most toilet obstructions stem from improperly disposed items such as cigarette butts, facial tissues, or various household objects rather than properly manufactured toilet paper.

Minister Peng took to Facebook to share technical details about household plumbing systems. He explained that standard S-bend toilet pipes typically measure 2 inches in diameter, while connected sewage pipes extend to 4 inches. The minister emphasized that routine maintenance and proper cleaning practices effectively prevent blockages, helping households avoid inconvenient plumbing emergencies. ◼
