TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's National Immigration Agency (NIA, 內政部移民署) conducted an unannounced inspection at National Taiwan University (NTU, 台灣大學) campus Thursday afternoon (Aug. 7), sparking immediate concerns over campus autonomy. University officials promptly contacted the immigration agency to request a face-to-face discussion regarding enforcement procedures, with both parties agreeing to meet in the coming days.
The NIA, accompanied by the Taipei City Foreign and Disabled Labor Office (台北市勞動力重建運用處), provided explanations and issued an apology to NTU officials that same day. Immigration authorities stated they had entered the campus to investigate missing migrant workers, pledging to respect university autonomy in future operations and improve advance notification procedures. The agency emphasized their inspection targeted only vendor employees and an illegal employer's son attempting to flee, confirming no students were subject to inspection.
The enforcement operation deployed one specialized brigade officer from Taipei alongside three labor office inspectors to conduct the campus investigation. Immigration authorities confirmed that both the illegal employer and the missing migrant worker would be transferred to appropriate government agencies for further legal processing and administrative action. ◼
