TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Heavy rainstorms swept across Taiwan on Monday afternoon (Sept. 8) due to the influence of southern cloud systems and low-pressure areas. The Central Weather Administration (CWA, 中央氣象署) reported that while Typhoon Tapah posed no direct threat, coastal regions should remain vigilant against strong winds and waves.
Rainfall reached 150 millimeters in Hualien's Xiulin Township (秀林鄉) by early morning, with a three-hour accumulation of 180 millimeters, classifying it as a short-duration heavy rainfall event. Throughout the evening, sporadic showers occurred from central Taiwan northward, while low pressure and southern winds prompted consistent rain in Hualien, Taitung, and Hengchun.
CWA pointed out that the eastern sea's low-pressure system is moving north and, combined with counterclockwise circulation and southern winds, continues to cause frequent showers in eastern Taiwan and Hengchun. Weather conditions are expected to stabilize overnight and into Tuesday, though afternoon thunderstorms remain likely, especially in mountainous areas.
Furthermore, the administration predicts afternoon thunderstorms to persist from Wednesday through Saturday, with scattered rain throughout the day in the southeastern and Hengchun regions. Western Taiwan will experience muggy conditions, with temperatures ranging from 32 to 35 degrees Celsius. Areas including Taipei (台北), New Taipei (新北), Changhua (彰化), Yunlin (雲林), and Kaohsiung (高雄) have a chance of surpassing 36 degrees Celsius.
