TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Typhoon Ragasa killed 14 people and left 124 missing after triggering catastrophic floods in Taiwan's Hualien County on Tuesday (Sept. 23). Flash floods severed bridges and submerged homes in Guangfu Township (光復鄉) Tuesday (Sept. 23). The Central Emergency Operations Center (中央災害應變中心), Taiwan's disaster response agency, reported 18 people injured in the unprecedented deluge.
The Central Emergency Operations Center (中央災害應變中心) confirmed Wednesday casualty figures remain under review as rescue teams search for survivors. Premier Cho Jung-tai (卓榮泰) is expected in Hualien for disaster assessment that day. Transportation Minister Chen Shih-kai (陳世凱) also inspected the damaged Matai'an Creek Bridge in the morning.
Rescue operations intensified as Hualien County Fire Bureau (花蓮消防局) deployed personnel for evacuations while military troops prepared cleanup operations. Many victims were elderly residents unable to escape the sudden flooding, officials confirmed. Firefighters from multiple counties worked overnight as urban water levels receded, leaving significant mud and debris throughout affected areas. ◼
