TAIPEI (TVBS News) — President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) received Japanese Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) legislator Masaji Matsuyama (松山政司) Tuesday (Sept. 30) at the Presidential Office (總統府), accepting disaster relief donations for Hualien. The high-level diplomatic meeting unfolded amid ongoing LDP leadership elections, demonstrating Japan's continued commitment to Taiwan relations. Lai emphasized the "familial bond" between Taiwan and Japan while expressing gratitude for Tokyo's disaster assistance.

Lai characterized Matsuyama's visit as evidence of deepening bilateral ties, noting it occurred during Japan's domestic political transition with LDP leadership elections. The president emphasized the meeting would enhance Japanese understanding of Taiwan's political and economic developments. Lai highlighted both nations' historical cooperation during regional crises and Japan's commitment to peace amid growing authoritarian challenges in East Asia.

Lai referenced last week's trilateral U.S.-Japan-South Korea foreign ministers' statement supporting Taiwan Strait peace, marking the third such affirmation this year opposing unilateral changes. The president described these positions as reflecting growing democratic consensus on regional stability. He emphasized solidarity's importance while expressing Taiwan's commitment to strengthening security and trade partnerships with Japan.

Matsuyama extended condolences for Taiwan's recent typhoon victims while calling for enhanced bilateral collaboration in disaster prevention and mitigation. The Japanese legislator acknowledged both countries face similar natural disaster challenges, emphasizing shared vulnerabilities in the Pacific region. He underscored Taiwan's significance to Japan through frequent economic exchanges and visits, expressing hopes for increased cooperation between the democratic allies. ◼
