TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council (MAC, 陸委會), the government agency managing China relations, dismissed Wednesday (Oct. 1) Chinese President Xi Jinping's (習近平) National Day statements as lacking novelty. Xi had reiterated opposition to Taiwan independence and foreign interference during a reception preceding the People's Republic of China's National Day.
The MAC maintained Taiwan's cross-strait policy remains consistent, focusing on preserving Taiwan Strait status quo while defending sovereignty and democratic freedoms. The council emphasized that the Chinese Communist Party (CCP, 中共) merely reiterated old policies without offering new approaches to bilateral relations.
Xinhua News Agency (新華社), China's official news agency, reported Xi's remarks during the customary reception marking the 76th anniversary of the People's Republic of China's founding. Xi emphasized deepening cross-strait exchanges while asserting China's territorial claims, stating the need to oppose Taiwan independence separatist activities and external interference while safeguarding sovereignty. ◼
