TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Kuomintang (KMT, 國民黨) legislator Yang Chiung-ying (楊瓊瓔) announced her candidacy for the Taichung mayoral race on Monday (Dec. 8). Yang will compete against Johnny Chiang (江啟臣), deputy legislative speaker of the Legislative Yuan (立法院), Taiwan's parliament, for the party nomination. Yang emphasized her camaraderie with Chiang during a POP Radio (POP撞新聞) interview, stating they support each other like siblings climbing a mountain regardless of who wins.

Yang expressed confidence in defeating Democratic Progressive Party (DPP, 民進黨) opponent Ho Hsin-chun (何欣純) if she secures the Kuomintang nomination. The legislator stated her willingness to challenge the central government with demands for specific commitments to Taichung residents. Yang highlighted differences from Chiang, noting that while Chiang excels in international and defense discussions, she offers 24/7 service commitment and extensive administrative experience.

Yang views the election as a referendum on the ruling party's trustworthiness, not just a contest of personal qualities between candidates. The legislator referenced KMT Chairperson Cheng Li-wen's (鄭麗文) intention to establish a new order by nominating candidates who meet public expectations and possess electoral viability. Yang stated current Mayor Lu Shiow-yen (盧秀燕) supports fair competition based on party regulations, reiterating their mutual respect and support for each other.

Yang hinted current Mayor Lu should take on greater responsibilities, suggesting her potential candidacy for the 2028 presidential election in Taiwan. The legislator praised Lu's unity and support for the Kuomintang, highlighting the mayor's wisdom in party leadership and governance. Yang's comments underscore the party's focus on developing strong candidates for future national elections beyond the Taichung mayoral race. ◼
