TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Shoushan Zoo (高雄壽山動物園) in Kaohsiung announced on Tuesday (Feb. 24) that its beloved white tiger, Chaohai (昭海), passed away at the age of 19 on Sunday (Feb. 22). The zoo stated that Chaohai died peacefully, surrounded by caretakers and veterinarians, and has been sent to the National Pingtung University of Science and Technology (屏東科技大學) for further procedures.

Born on Nov. 24, 2006, Chaohai arrived in Kaohsiung in 2011 and battled chronic kidney disease since 2019. The zoo managed to slow the progression of the disease through diverse diets and hydration, thanks to the dedicated care of veterinarians and caretakers. Kaohsiung's Tourism Bureau Director, Kao Min-lin (高閔琳), expressed sorrow over Chaohai's passing, noting that his life embodied the core values of life education and provided valuable insights into the care of aging Bengal tigers.

The zoo stated that some had mistakenly believed Chaohai was malnourished because of his frail appearance due to age. The zoo addressed this misconception by providing educational materials explaining the natural physiological changes in aging animals. Under the zoo's meticulous care, Chaohai maintained a high quality of life and achieved remarkable longevity.

A caretaker who had cared for Chaohai for many years recalled initial apprehension due to the tiger's unique nature, but over time developed a familial bond. The zoo expressed gratitude for Chaohai's companionship, noting that his majestic presence and the joy he brought to visitors will remain cherished memories for all who loved him.
