TAIPEI (TVBS News) — With the World Baseball Classic (WBC) approaching, Taiwan's national team has been dealt a setback. The Chinese Professional Baseball League (CPBL) announced that Jonathon Long, a Taiwanese-American player with the Chicago Cubs, has officially withdrawn from the WBC Taiwan roster after his recovery timeline fell short of tournament preparations. A replacement will be announced following the upcoming Taiwan-Japan Baseball International Exchange Games.

Long sustained the injury on Sunday (Feb. 22), Taiwan time, during Major League Baseball spring training, when he collided while playing defense and hurt his left elbow. Initially, he planned to join the Taiwan team on Wednesday (Feb. 25) but postponed his trip due to the injury.  According to the CPBL, the league was notified earlier by the Chicago Cubs that Long continues to experience elbow soreness, which has affected his ability to swing effectively. After a comprehensive evaluation by the club, it was determined that his rehabilitation schedule would not allow him to participate in this year's WBC. As a result, Long will be unable to join the national team and will have to step away from the tournament. The CPBL issued a statement expressing Long's disappointment, noting his strong desire to represent the national team and wishing him a speedy recovery.

The announcement added that Team Taiwan will carry forward Long's spirit and determination as it prepares for the WBC, emphasizing unity and a full commitment to the competition. The coaching staff will evaluate roster options and publicly name a replacement player after the conclusion of the Taiwan-Japan exhibition series. This development emphasizes the challenges athletes face with injuries and their impact on international competitions.
