TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) chips have energy-saving benefits, according to Larry Sun, senior manager of the company's environmental safety department. Sun stated on Friday (April 19) that for every kilowatt-hour of electricity used in production, TSMC chips can save the world 6.8 kilowatt-hours of electricity.

Sun made these remarks at the third ITRI NET ZERO DAY forum and special exhibition hosted by the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI). He shared TSMC's experiences in promoting net-zero strategies and practices at the forum.

TSMC works with many consulting firms, with the most important being the ITRI Industrial Economics and Knowledge Center, Sun said. This team is capable of calculating the energy-saving benefits of products.

While TSMC does use a significant amount of electricity, the ITRI Industrial Economics and Knowledge Center estimates that for every kilowatt-hour of electricity TSMC uses in production, it can save the world four kilowatt-hours of electricity. The latest estimate is that in high-efficiency computing (HPC), TSMC can save the world 6.8 kilowatt-hours of electricity for every kilowatt-hour used, stated Sun.

Sun highlighted that TSMC originally planned to achieve 100% renewable energy use by 2050, but has now moved up the timeline to 2040. Additionally, the company aims to increase the use of renewable energy in its production operations from 40% to 60% by 2030. Despite the scarcity of the renewable energy market in Taiwan, TSMC will strive to achieve these ambitious goals.

TSMC is working with its supply and value chains, coordinating with senior executives to drive awareness and action. The company hopes to fully cooperate with the value chain, using innovation to move towards net-zero.
