TAICHUNG (TVBS News) — Taichung Mayor Lu Shiow-yen (盧秀燕) returned to Taiwan early Wednesday (July 24) morning, cutting short her U.S. visit due to Typhoon Gaemi (凱米颱風).

She explained her wishes to be with residents as the storm approached, reflected in her decision to rush back before the typhoon's storm circle reached Taichung.

Mayor Lu had arrived in the U.S. just seven hours earlier on a delegation trip. Soon after, she held an online meeting with her team back in Taichung, where they decided to suspend work and classes on Wednesday.

The city government announced the suspension late at night, citing the increasing strength and southward shift of Typhoon Gaemi.

Lu revealed she stayed in constant contact with the Taichung City Government during her flight. Upon landing in Seattle, she reviewed the Central Weather Administration's (CWA, 中央氣象局) latest data, which indicated Taichung might enter the typhoon's storm circle.

She immediately held an emergency meeting and decided that Deputy Mayor Huang would lead the delegation in the U.S. while she booked a flight back to Taiwan.

Mayor Lu also explained the sudden announcement to suspend work and classes late last night, stating that after considering the typhoon's growing intensity and its potential landfall between Yilan and Hualien, the city government opted for caution, prioritizing safety and issuing the typhoon day to allow residents to prepare in advance.

As Typhoon Gaemi approaches, Mayor Lu's swift return underscores her commitment to the city's safety. Residents are urged to stay informed and take necessary precautions as the storm nears.
