TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Meteorologist Wu Der-romg (吳德榮) warned on Monday (July 14) that Taiwan faces a potential threat from a tropical system developing within a monsoon trough. He stated that the latest models predict this system will pass through the Bashi Channel between days five and eight. Wu emphasized that Taiwan should not underestimate this threat.

Wu described Taiwan's weather as mostly cloudy and hot, with a chance of scattered thunderstorms in the afternoon, particularly in mountainous areas, which could occasionally extend to nearby plains. He noted that from Tuesday (July 15) to Thursday (July 15-17), the weather will remain sunny and hot, with a chance of brief morning and afternoon showers in central and southern regions.

By Friday (July 18), Wu predicted isolated afternoon thunderstorms in the western half of the island, while the eastern half will experience increased moisture and possible scattered showers. He assured that Typhoon Baihe (百合) poses no threat to Taiwan, as it moves northward, skirting the eastern coasts of Honshu and Hokkaido in Japan.

Wu highlighted that both the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) and Global Forecast System (GFS) models show the monsoon trough moving northward from Friday, with the tropical system passing through the Bashi Channel. He also mentioned that simulations for days nine and ten suggest the potential activity of another tropical system east of Taiwan, urging close monitoring as international models continue to adjust.
