TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Basketball star Jeremy Lin (林書豪) announced his retirement Sunday (Aug. 31), ending a remarkable 15-year professional career that captivated fans worldwide. The 37-year-old shared the news in a social media video, calling his retirement the "hardest decision he's ever made." His departure marks the end of an era for Asian-American basketball representation.

Lin first captured global attention in 2012 when he sparked the phenomenon known as "Linsanity" while playing for the New York Knicks. His unexpected rise began in 2010 when he entered the NBA draft, later leading the Knicks to a seven-game winning streak. Lin's electrifying performance landed him on Time Magazine's list of the 100 most influential people, with his No. 17 jersey becoming essential merchandise for Taiwanese tourists visiting New York.

Lin returned to Taiwan's professional basketball scene in 2023, guiding the New Taipei Kings (新北國王) to two championship victories. His court impact proved significant, with fans expressing deep regret over his retirement decision. Supporters acknowledge his irreplaceable influence on global fans and the broader Chinese community worldwide.

Lin's career spanned the NBA, Chinese Basketball Association, and Taiwanese Professional Basketball League, amassing a net worth exceeding NT$2.3 billion (around US$75 million). The veteran has not disclosed his future plans, but his spirit and beliefs established him as a role model for Chinese basketball players. His prominence in Taiwan's basketball community remains unmatched. ◼ (At time of reporting, US$1 equals approximately NT$30.633)
