TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Pegatron Corporation (和碩) Chairman T.H. Tung (童子賢) remarked that nuclear power must coexist with green energy after receiving the Special Contribution Award on Monday (Dec. 8). The Chung-Hwa Nuclear Society (中華民國核能學會) honored Tung as the third recipient of the prestigious award since the society's inception. Tung emphasized Taiwan's shared aspiration for clean, affordable, stable, efficient, and high-quality power during an interview following the ceremony.

The Taiwan Power Company, Taipower (台電), estimated the self-safety inspection of Taiwan's Third Nuclear Power Plant will take at least 1.5 years. The state-owned utility projects a restart in 2027, while Taoyuan Mayor Chang San-cheng (張善政) warned of severe consequences if the restart proves disingenuous. Tung expressed confusion over concerns the restart might be a political maneuver, reassuring that authorities earnestly address climate change issues.

Tung reiterated the importance of preventing climate change while providing Taiwan with clean and stable energy, asserting nuclear and green energy coexistence represents inevitable consensus. Taiwan rose to 16th place in the Global AI Index but scored lower in advanced AI talent, commercial ecosystems, and development capabilities. Tung stressed Taiwan's significant role in the global tech industry, encouraging a steady mindset and continued efforts without undue concern over rankings. ◼
