TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Tourism Administration (交通部觀光署), Taiwan's national tourism agency, completed carbon footprint assessments Tuesday (Dec. 9) for 10 "Golden Phoenix Tours" (凰金遊程) in 2025. The initiative aims to promote low-carbon travel and help travel agencies identify carbon emission hotspots within their tours. The assessments mark a crucial milestone for Taiwan's travel industry's low-carbon transformation.
The administration hosted a workshop on calculating tour carbon footprints, inviting representatives from the Climate Change Administration (氣候變遷署), My Taitung Trip (島嶼見學旅行社), and Ecotour Taiwan (原森旅行社). Representatives discussed the life cycle scope of tour carbon footprints using the ISO14067 standard. The workshop produced a "Tour Carbon Footprint Calculation Guide" (旅行業遊程碳足跡計算指引) covering carbon classification, data responsibility, simplified assessment logic, and industry feasibility.
The guide assists travel agencies in sustainable tour management by outlining system boundaries, identifying emission sources, and detailing data collection methods. The Tourism Administration published the guide on its administrative information website, enabling agencies to understand carbon footprint basics and seek professional consultation. Agencies can now calculate their tour emissions using the standardized framework provided.
The administration commissioned CHASE Sustainable Technology (大云永續科技股份有限公司) to conduct the assessments, which took four months to complete. The Tourism Administration encouraged agencies to undergo third-party verification to apply for "Carbon Footprint Labeling" (碳標籤) from the Department of Environment (環境部). Verification offers positive recognition and helps identify high-energy processes for optimizing sustainable tour design.
